After 2 months without opening the spillways, the Itaipu Hydroelectric Power Plant will keep its floodgates open until at least Sunday (12), Valentine's Day. This will even be the day of the peak of its flow, draining about 10 thousand m³ of water per second, equivalent to eight times the average volume of the Iguaçu Falls, which is 1,2 thousand m³ of water per second.
The spectacle of the waters is an additional attraction in the spillway, which has been open uninterrupted since June 1.
The discharge occurs due to the large volume of rainfall in the Southeast region. Initially the floodgates would be open for 10 days, but this projection is already being altered for more, because Itaipu is receiving enough water from other plants above its reservoir. They are more than 50 mills of medium and large sizes installed upstream.
This year, Itaipu hit a record number of production records: best January, February, two-month, quarter, four-month, May and five-month periods of its entire history (in 32 years of operation).
Even generating at maximum load, Itaipu is draining excess water not used for the generation of electric energy.
