On this last Saturday, 17 of December, the Itaipu Binacional re-took the lead in the world of Energy Production, reaching a production of 98.800.319 megawatt-hours (MWh), thus dismantling the Three Gorges Plant in China. With these numbers Itaipu exceeds the production recall of 98,6 million MWh, registered in 2013.
The technical team of Itaipu also predicts that the plant will reach on Wednesday (21) the unprecedented goal of 100 million of MWh, enough energy to supply the consumption of the entire planet for two days. Total 2016 production is expected to be above 102,5 million MWh.
At 2014, Itaipu had lost its position as the world leader in annual electricity production as a result of the water crisis Brazil faced due to the drought that hit most of the country for the second consecutive year.
An achievement of this, could not have gone unnoticed. The brand was celebrated with a ceremony at the Plant itself, in which the countdown of growing numbers was registered on the big screen.
The Brazilian director general of Itaipu, Jorge Samek, celebrated the achievement of the record of electricity generation and pointed out that Itaipu returns to assume the world leadership of energy production ahead of Three Gorges. According to him, the Chinese mill is expected to produce around 90 of millions of MWh this year.
"More energy is more energy for the development of countries, more royalties that each country receives. This year was spectacular and we will be able to break that brand that we have been looking for [100 millions of MWh] for so long and we should close the year with 102,8 million megawatt hours. Hardly, a hydroelectric plant will break that mark. We ourselves will have a lot of difficulty going beyond this mark, because it was a year where everything worked well, "said Samek.
This year, Three Gorges, which closed November with generation around 83 million MWh, predicts a total production of 90 million MWh. Having confirmed Itaipu's projections, the final advantage placed against China will be more than 10 million MWh, equivalent to more than one month of generation. With 22 a thousand megawatts (MW) of installed capacity, before 14 thousand MW of the Itaipu plant - that is, 60% more -, the Chinese plant of Three Gorges began to operate in full load in 2012. However, although with much higher capacity installed equipment, Three Gorges was only able to produce more than Itaipu in 2014, when Brazil faced a great drought and water generation was impaired.
